  • Episode 5

As the party charges back through the portal to confront Thaddeus Yinth, they are surprised by a band of armed humans, ostensibly sent by Thaddeus, who attack viciously. The party is able to eke out a victory, but at different points, Oberon and Dante flee, irking the ones who remain. Oberon comforts a nearly emotionally broken Dante before they rejoin the party.

They search through the rest of Thaddeus’ base, which is now abandoned. Sinda’narin finds a small silver key, identical to the one Georgie found in her home in Waterdeep. She tucks it away while she and Lianna read through some of Thaddeus’ papers. They detail legends of a creature with power over life and death, a rival to the Yuan-ti’s snake god. Glasstaff (they assume) may have awoken her or channelled her power to create the abominations. Thaddeus goes on to express anger at the party for not aiding him in a rebellion against the Yuan-ti in Luskan. He also speaks of his desire to join with this unknown power.

While they rest, they finally have a little time to deal with the slew of curses that have been affecting them whenever they enter a portal. Oberon’s fiendish patron Jikzhar removes Dante’s deformity but also forms a pact with him in secret, although the rest of the party can clearly see fire course through him. Later, Georgie decides not to use the magical, fire rune inlaid crossbow in response.

The party makes their way to the center of town where a great battle has begun. Thaddeus along with a small undead army are winning against the Yuan-ti. Most of the party hide in wait while Lianna attempts to convince Thaddeus that he is mistaken in his alliance. When things turn sour, the party attacks, but Thaddeus is able to escape beneath the earth. They pursue down a tunnel, though Lianna is distraught. They are soon blocked by a huge obsidian door with a relief depiction of an all powerful woman smiting Yuan-ti. Oberon is able to blow open the doors, but he and Dante both hear a nervous Jikzhar in their heads. He whispers, “This is bad. We’re about to meet my ex-girlfriend.”

Accused of murder and left to the ancient punishments of Port Nyanzaru, the fellowship found themselves contestants in the Executioner’s Run. Part courtroom, part spectacle, the Run pitted the party against a gauntlet of Chult’s native predators, the dinosaurs.

However before their appointed ‘courtdate,’ two unique figures entered the tale. A befuddled wizard (is there any other kind?) named Alazhaar joined the party during their incarceration before the Run. A purveyor of mushrooms, sharp wit and secrets, the old human quickly carved out his place in the newly formed company. Also joining them in their cell was the Realm-renowned author and peddler of ‘questionable’ tales, Volothamp Geddarm.

Volo promised to aid the party in securing passage into the interior of Chult, for the low, low price of his guaranteed survival in the Executioner’s Run. By working in concert with their newly acquired wizard, the party bested the trials of the Run and made their way to Ekene-Afa, the Merchant Prince in charge of river transportation and canoe sales.

After meeting their appointed guide, Azaka Stormfang, and acquiring a passenger, Ekene-Afa’s son, Tiryk, the party set off into the heart of darkness; toward uncountable evils and their destinies.

Join us next time as the party finds themselves in the shadow of FireFinger and at the mercy of The Nine Trickster Gods!

  • Episode 4

Our adventure begins this week with a flight of Darkmantles blinding and attacking the part while a female Ettin met them with full force. The fighting is intense, with the inevitable death of LUIGI THE RUM GREMLIN and the near fatalities of MOBO, BORS, and LAIRE SILVERTONGUE. The ettin was eventually joined by her mate, and the stakes were raised. Eventually MAYA DE LAS NIEVES fell the two-headed giants and held a funeral for her friend. ZERA, the wood-elf pirate, discovered a mysterious puzzle door, but given the group’s poor state of affairs, they opted to forgo the challenge and make their way out of the caverns and returned to the world above on the eastern bank of the RIVER OF PAIN.

After much discussion and debate, the party elected to head towards the Eldermount, which loomed on the horizon. The reason for this was finding ALISTAIR THORNROSE was a priority. While traveling there they came upon a massive fortress, with seven gates. Though the gates opened and they gained entrance, they could find no signs of inhabitants. While exploring the main entryway, they set off a trap of POISON GAS which fell LAIRE, ZERA, GNAK, MOBO, and BORS. SURI and MAYA then encountered the mysterious entity LUZ DE LAS ESTRELLAS. She let them know they were free to stay, but also warned them that her fortress of MEHRANGARH defends itself. The party escaped and recovered and made the decision to flee into the wilds, where they learned they were being watched by a MYSTERIOUS RIDER dressed in robes.

They were unable to successful engage it as it fled when approached. GNAK GRIMEHOOK followed the trail to the Eldermount and brought the party to THE WHITE GATES, a five-story high entry-way made of pearl. The trail showed that ALISTAIR THORNROSE had elected to go a different path up the mountain.

The party trekked up the perilous paths and uncovered the web-covered SHRINE OF LAMENTATIONS. Within they found the captive Knight of the Heavens, a group of Tyndulfr prisoners, and OSKAR TROLL-KING, a giant monstrosity, who wore the CROWN OF MALICE and wielded an obsidian great-club named DOOM. OSKAR had the torso and arms and face of a troll, but the thorax and legs of a spider.

The climactic battle saw the RESCUE of ALISTAIR THORNROSE, THE FREEING of the TYNDULFR, and the INEVITABLE DEATH of OSKAR TROLL-KING, LORD OF TROLLS, PRINCE OF SPIDERS.

All assassinations start with whispers in dreams. Quinn, the Druid. Grob, the Barbarian. Rurick, the Paladin. And Hezekiah, the Rogue. A fellowship formed to kill a god. A quest so vital its only chance is the shield of secrecy. However for a being like the lich-god Acererak secrets are just another part of the game.

Gone from the village of Selu and newly arrived on the peninsula of Chult, the party dared the streets of the beautiful Port Nyanzaru. At one with the jungle surrounding it, Port Nyanzaru displayed the symbiosis of a society built in harmony with nature and an ingenuity of conservation lacking in most of the other cities of the Realms. As they traveled the cobblestone streets, the decision was made by Raven, their enigmatic fifth member, to visit the Temple of Savras.

There truths were revealed to both Hezekiah and Grob…a fitting pair to receive divination. Falling afoul of some of the locals, the party was confronted and threatened with arrest, detainment, and perhaps something even more sinister. They resisted and left their attackers to the damp cobblestones of Port Nyanzaru.

However, events have been set in motion and for all its enlightenment, Port Nyanzaru is still a small and static society, one where a shift in power cannot be tolerated. Charged with the murder of those that threatened them, the party finds themselves sentenced to something called the Executioner’s Run.

All that and the return of The Nine Trickster Gods in the next episode of Tomb of Annihilation!

While within the tower, LAIRE SILVERTONGUE, Bard Extraordinaire, found JASPER OF THE BLUE WIZARDS, one of the King’s FAVORED FIVE. Jasper refused to join with him and return to Tyr-Royale as he was undergoing deep study within the TOWER OF WHITE-FIRE with one NICODEME the SEER. With the Party held at sword-point, we follow the story of their lost ally, MAYA DE LAS NIEVES and her companion LUIGI THE RUM GREMLIN. We learn through her story that the wolf-tribe is a race known as the TYNDULFR, the LOST WOLVES. Humans would call them Half-Orc, though they claim an alternative divine origin as CHILDREN OF THE SILENT GOD.

Having ascended amongst the tribe to a position of power, she learns of the conflict occurring between the TRIBE and the PARTY and plans to intervene, mustering support amongst the village elders. While this is occurring, LAIRE SILVERTONGUE, bard extraordinaire, has fled the caves in pursuit of a fleeing adversary, but he is met by a garrison of tribe members returning from the hunt. Walking with them is GNAKK GRIMHOOK, another lost ally. In a confluence of conflict, an intense dialogue begins between Maya and the female commander-in-chief of the wolf-tribe. The decision is made that CHETAN, SON OF RAM, the tribal chief, shall decide the dispute between the party and the mysterious DEVI DHARA, who may not be exactly what she seems.

Despite having the side of truth and right on their side, the party is ordered to go down below the world and perform rituals in a GOLDEN TEMPLE OF LAW AND CHAOS. It is there that they meet OLD SNAKE TEETH, who can only be described as a snake in wolf’s clothing. He convinces Laire to perform dark rituals that bring down the WALL OF FIRE, an impenetrable defense placed by the Gods themselves to keep the SERPENT EMPIRE OF THE SOUTH out of the sacred lands. It is there that they meet two women, ELEONOR, who wears of a beautiful floral gown, and JULIETTE, who is armored head to toe. After some convincing, the now deformed Thaddeus Yinth, son of the party’s former nemesis Oscar Yinth, allows the party to accompany him to the local resistance’s headquarters. They reveal they are looking for a former Knight of Tempus at the Luskan docks to help combat whatever is controlling the flesh abominations in Waterdeep and Phandalin. Aware of the new blights, Thaddeus reveals that the energy around those creations feels similar to the mutative energy that the Yinths and their compatriots were bringing over from the Feywild. Georgie points out that Glasstaff, Oberon’s doppelganger and a powerful necromancer, who was let go by the party, could be the one behind this. Thaddeus offers to scry on him while the party continues on with their original mission. Thaddeus tells them that the Yuan-ti keep a large portion of the enslaved people near the docks where this knight was last seen. A few veterans offer to distract some of the Yuan-ti guarding the docks. Lianna stays behind to speak with Thaddeus, lamenting how things could have turned out differently if the party hadn’t disappeared into the Feywild.

Along with the veterans, Oberon’s deck of illusions manages to distract several of the Yuan-ti, and the party is able to swiftly deal with the remaining. As Georgie kills one, Oberon’s patron Jikzhar reveals to Oberon that her new crossbow, inscribed with flame runes, adds to his power when she kills with it. Oberon takes a life for the first time, shocking Georgie, the only other one present from the original party. Dante finds the knight Barrion spoke of, who turns out to be his former captain Landar. Dante asks after his fiance Hildy, but Landar doesn’t know what became of her after the battle at Waterdeep.

Thaddeus and Lianna reunite with the party who are in the midst of trying to sneak the civilians past an engorged, sleeping sewer snake. Before it can do much, the party completely wreck it, but it does manage to submerge Dante in sewage, affecting him despite his holy immunity to common diseases. When they arrive back to the resistance’s headquarters, they speak with Landar who reveals that a man who looked exactly like Oberon (Glasstaff) approached his order of knights in search of a way to open a portal back to the Feywild, which the knights could do via an artifact of their order. Glasstaff must have taken it from their temple in Waterdeep. Landar also tells the party that any kind of consecration of the temple district in Waterdeep will take months of uninterrupted worship. The party first plan to take the civilians to the safe haven Duncan moved their people to in Triboar. Thaddeus reveals that this is also where his scrying revealed Glasstaff to be.

The party leave immediately via another of Jikzhar’s portals, for which he requests Oberon to make Sinda’narin’s new quarterstaff into a weapon similar to Georgie’s. As they step through the portal, Dante’s suspicions of Oberon are newly ignited. The party are greeted by the shocking sight of peace and happiness of which they are immediately suspicious. They reunite with Duncan who reports no sightings of Glasstaff. They realize Thaddeus must have lied to them, but at the moment, confronting Oberon’s demon is the most immediately achievable goal. Jikzhar speaks to the group through Oberon, revealing some of his goals are currently in line with the party although they know this won’t always be the case. Georgie wonders if Jikzhar can restore Oberon’s memories of the group, but he makes it clear he would want something in return. The discussion ends there as the party work out that they need to confront Thaddeus as soon as possible before the portal to Luskan closes. They rush back through. As they do, the portal’s magic affects Dante, transforming him into a hideous beast.

The party’s assault on each other is halted by the noise from upstairs. They rush to Oberon’s room to find one of the fleshy masses moving through the open portal to Waterdeep. The party is able to collectively force it back. Oberon’s fiendish patron Jikzhar advises Oberon to destroy the portal using magical energy. Although this works, Oberon’s spells seem to backfire on him, and afterwards, they advise Duncan to evacuate Phandalin, as there are still other mounds and crows on the outskirts of town. They prepare to follow their original plan to find the Knights of Tempus in Luskan, which may still be ruled by the Yuan-ti. Georgie finds her still traumatized mother and asks her about the silver key that connects the Whitmore and Gladstone families. Her mother seems disturbed, but Georgie doesn’t press it further. She asks Six-Fingers to watch over her mother since he is staying with the refugees and Duncan. The party, along with Sildar and their new ally Sinda’narin, meet up again at the mines, things still tense between Oberon and Dante.

The party descends into the mines so Oberon can open a portal to Luskan in relative safely. Jikzhar confides to Oberon that both of them are strongest near the magma-filled cavern where the party killed the giant snake. They step through yet another portal right into a house filled with Yuan-ti. Fortunately, the party’s entrance is very unexpected, and they make quick work of the snake folk. However, nearby Yuan-ti guards hear the combat, and the party is barely able to escape onto the rooftops and down into an abandoned house basement where they meet two enslaved humans in hiding: Barrion and Kayra. Dante convinces them to assist the party. The couple speaks of a resistance movement centered in the noble district to the west and of an enslaved paladin of Tempus near the docks to the East. Dante promises to lead the two civilians out of town after the party achieves their goal.

After a rest, the party decides to head west to meet with the local resistance in order to help the people of Luskan before seeking out the paladin, but Oberon has his own priorities. As they pass the Museum of Magicks, Jikzhar reminds Oberon of his agreement to fetch a pair of magical bracers as repayment for opening the portals. Oberon persuades the party (except for Dante) to enter the museum to gather items and increase their chance of success in their mission. Oberon distracts most of the Yuan-ti guards and charms the remaining one. The party is able to access the museum with ease thanks to Lianna’s keen eyes. The four inside find a crossbow etched with fire runes, a glowing quarterstaff, a bag of magic beans, and the bracers of which Jikzhar spoke. Sinda’narin and Georgie retrieve them without setting off any alarms or traps. As they leave, Dante reprimands them harshly for wasting time and endangering Barrion and Kayra by leaving them out in the open. As they continue to their destination, they are too distracted by their shiny new items to notice the crossbow-wielding, hooded figures on the rooftops above. To the shock of the party, their leader reveals himself to be Thaddeus Yinth, who they were told died in the Yuan-ti’s initial assault in the mines.

A quest so vital its only chance is the shield of secrecy. However for a being like the lich-god Acererak secrets are just another part of the game.

Reunited and momentarily safe, the party found itself in the small village of the Paku tribe. Strangely prepared for their arrival, the Chief, Cargoth, took them to see their Duneie and bear witness to the visions his magic evoked. Each member of the party experienced something from their past, present and future, but like all elements of this quest, secrecy further jeopardized an already dire situation. When they regained their senses, the Duneie appeared possessed by an unknown force, and though unable to ‘see’ the group, the voice of the possessor leaked from the old Shaman’s throat promising annihilation.

With their Vision Quest at an end, the heroes learned of a Paku prophecy; one that spoke of the four of them defending the tribe against foreign invaders. True to the story, the group took position in an ancient fortress and defeated the remains of The Black Spectre’s pirate crew. The prophecy fulfilled and their future’s foretold, the group must now journey into the very heart of darkness…Chult.
