Appearing in a pantry in Georgie’s family estate, the party is confronted by a firbolg in the process of looting the house. He introduces himself as Sinda’narin, but the party is distracted by Oberon’s new bout of amnesia. Georgie finds some of her family’s personal belongings and a small silver key that she doesn’t recognize. Sinda’narin suggests they head underground where the party’s old ally Six-Fingers has taken refuge with other survivors in Waterdeep. The party first head to Dante’s family estate and find the corpse of his brother Edward is missing. The Gladstone family has a passage under the city. Sinda’narin picks the intricate lock. After the others descend, Georgie compares the key she found to the lock – a perfect fit.

When the party reunites with Six-Fingers, he tells them that an aura of dark energy is coming from the Temple District. He suggests they investigate. On the way, he gives his condolences to Georgie. He sent men to help her family during the initial attack, but they were too late. The party emerges in a graveyard, the plots of which have been recently disturbed.  Lianna transforms into a crow and passes over the temples. She spies thousands of the flesh-eating crows nesting on the roofs and, most disturbingly, a mountain of pulsing flesh that seems to be growing. When she reports back, the party realizes where all the bodies in the graves have gone.

They discuss options for cleansing the area of this abomination since they can’t do it alone. Dante suggests the Knights of Tempus may be useful, although they likely defected to the Yuan-ti. They may be able to perform a large-scale consecration. They were last seen in the Yuan-ti slave mines in Luskan where the party’s ally Eona was headed. As Oberon and his patron Jikzhar prepare to transport the party back to Phandalin, Dante hones in on the fiendish presence emanating from Oberon. He confides this in Georgie as they pass through the portal.

Along with Six-Fingers, Sinda’narin, and a few more refugees, they all arrive back in Phandalin, but the portal won’t close. Jikzhar tells Oberon that someone in Waterdeep wrested control of it, but Oberon plays it off as part of a plan. Dante and Lianna attempt to barricade it while Georgie, Six-Fingers, and Sinda’narin report to Duncan who has disturbing news for them: four house-sized mounds of flesh roam the streets of Phandalin along with sporadic flocks of crows. In an act of impulse, Oberon storms outside to burn the mounds, but even his fiendish fire seems to have little effect as a mound spews acid at him in retaliation.

Oberon barters with Jikzhar to send the group straight to Luskan. In return, the fiend wants a set of magical bracers from a museum of magic. Oberon agrees. Sinda’narin asks after a woman he’s searching for but does not find her. Georgie reunites with Sildar – they’re working on their communication skills.  Soon after, the group decides to have an intervention for Oberon. After he quips about Dante’s “mercy” slaying of his brother Edward, Dante channels his god’s divinity to menace Oberon until Lianna counters this with a charm of her own. At that very moment, a disturbing sound rings out from the open, unguarded portal in Oberon’s room…

The party has been tasked with FINDING five legendary heroes who have gone missing on a mysterious new continent that the kingdom of the crown seeks to colonize and control.

Our adventure begins with a trial on the high seas. A pair of elves, ANDROMEDE and STEFANIA, have been accused of high treason and conspiracy against the crown. Our party of would-be heroes seek to determine the innocence of the elves, but fail to come up with enough evidence to support either claim.

The next morning they voyage to the new world, where they must overcome the harsh swamp land and lurking predators. To make matters worse they detect a planar shift: part of the swamp lands appear to be overcome by the SHADOWFELL. It is within this realm that they find the LOST COLONY SITE and are introduced to strange FISH-FOLK who seem to have some clues as to what became of the missing heroes. The fish-folk give the party a guide and protector, MOBO, smallest of the fish-folk.

During the dialog, a MASSIVE WOLF-SPIRIT descends upon the colony, summoning wolf-skin clad warriors who capture the party and take them to their lair. The party shares a cell with the dwarven man-at-arms, BORS, who served as a hireling with the MISSING HEROES. The elven party members find that they alone have been MARKED with mysterious symbols over their faces.

The party attempts an escape and blood is spilled in the LAIR OF THE WOLF-TRIBE. Outnumbered, the party has entered a PARLEY with the commander of the wolf-tribe military and her terms are clear:

“Give us the elves and all may live. Resist and all will perish.”

  • Finale

Our heroes finally descend into the mines where, to their great shock, they find Georgie’s traumatized mother who informs Georgie that the rest of her family were killed in the attack on Waterdeep. After leading her back to safety, the party skirt around a handful of Yuan-ti guards and a mass of dark dwarves until they come across a magical barrier with three six-headed Yuan-ti mages behind it. Eona dispels the shield, and after a difficult battle with several close calls averted by Eona’s healing, Nate and Georgie deal killing blows to the hydra-like creatures.

After a brief rest, Oberon’s two pixies scout ahead down a huge, circular, ridged tunnel. Pyrrle returns, but Pepper does not. Realizing their enemy is now very aware of their presence, they descend into its lair. A giant forge filled with magma dominates the space, as does the giant snake the party has met once before. The snake now has four humanoid faces attached to its body – the former faces of the Yinth family. Surprisingly, it wants to negotiate: closing the portals to the Feywild has trapped it, and it wants to create a new portal using one of the party member’s life essences, which they can either give voluntarily or not. They opt for not.

During the battle that follows, Oberon dons a pair of enchanted gloves. When he does so, a roaring voice fills his head and reveals itself as a new, fiendish patron for the former Archfey Warlock. With this aid, Oberon conjures fire from his hands and burns the snake. Georgie deals a hefty blow early on and is able to position the snake in front of the forge. The snake retaliates by focusing on Lianna who falls unconscious and inches dangerously close to death, which would give the snake what it needs. Nate dexterously runs up the snake and leaps into its mouth to carve it up from the inside. Once there, the jaws close, and Nate realizes he is both trapped and that he has a chance to kill the beast from the inside. He is successful, and as the snake falls, the other party members scramble to cut Nate free. But they are too late.

Eona drops to her knees, prays to her god Ilmater, and manages to bring Nate back from the other side, somewhat to his disappointment as he had hoped to be reunited with his deceased love Olyver in the afterlife. The air clears, and the party realizes they are victorious.

  • Episode 1

In the few weeks that have passed since the party’s victory over the giant snake leader of the Yuan-ti in the mines, Phandalin has been reclaimed and partially restored by the resistance, led by Duncan and Sildar Hallwinter and the party.

Having decided to find the friends he left behind in Waterdeep, Nate bids a late night farewell to a restless Georgie and leaves letters for Lianna and Oberon. In the morning, the ladies fetch Oberon for breakfast and overhear him seemingly talking to himself. In reality, he is becoming acquainted with his new fiendish patron.

At breakfast, the party meet their latest recruit: the last of the Knights of Tempus and an old acquaintance of Georgie’s: Dante Gladstone VII, the second son of a noble house from Waterdeep. He narrowly survived the initial siege by the Yuan-ti. His older brother Edward was mortally wounded there, and Dante had to put him out of his misery. Duncan asks the party to go on a reconnaissance mission to Waterdeep. The Yuan-ti have apparently left, and Duncan thinks it may be ripe for the retaking.

As the party gets acquainted with Dante, a commotion erupts outside. A massive murder of crows and ravens from the north descend onto Phandalin, pecking out the eyes of anyone who remains in the streets after the party’s shouts of warnings. The birds feed on the fallen corpses. After a few minutes, some of the birds begin to regurgitate the flesh they’ve consumed. The remains seem to animate and coalesce, eventually forming into the shape of a small child. It warns the party to stay away from Waterdeep, which it calls “their” city filled with “their people.” The party intuit that this is part of the reason the Yuan-ti have vacated Waterdeep. The child and birds leave before the party can respond.

Of course, they decide to ignore the warning.  They meet with Duncan and Sildar in an empty room in the manor, which Sildar has fashioned into a baby nursery much to the shock of the party, especially Georgie. Oberon’s new patron tells him that he can ferry the party directly into the city via a portal. Although they’re wary, they agree to make preparations to leave. Lianna haggles with Nori Rockseeker for some potions. Georgie and Dante catch up over drinks with Oberon eventually joining them after talking with Droop, the goblin, and becoming better acquainted with Jikzhar, his patron. Eona takes time to pray to her god Ilmater, who, at long last, speaks to her and urges her to head to Luskan to resume her sacred duties. After dancing around the subject the next morning, Eona reveals to the party that she must leave them. Eona and Oberon exchange amulets of their patrons with each other, and the party bid tearful farewells.

Oberon’s patron summons the portal, and the remaining party members step through into Georgie’s family’s old manor. However, when they emerge, Oberon looks around at the people around him and cannot remember who they are…

When last we left our heroes, they discovered their day trip to the Feywild took two and a half years in their own world. In that time, the Yuan-ti’s plan succeeded…

In sad spirits, the party presses on to the Old Forest. Eona attempts to comfort Oberon and Lianna. Georgie avoids the others, and Nate creates makeshift graves for his fellow orphans who likely died in the attack on Waterdeep. They are met by a ragtag troop of survivors sent by Duncan. When they arrive in the hidden valley of the resistance’s base camp, the party are both celebrated as beacons of hope and jeered as part of the cause of the country’s current state.

They meet with Duncan and discover the number of survivors from the Yinths’ release of the mutative drug Spark and their hostile takeover of Faerun numbers in the mere thousands. No one knows what remains in the mines of Phandalin, but the party suspects the Yuan-ti’s leader may still reside there. In private, Georgie returns Duncan’s enchanted engagement ring to him, although, soon after, Nate takes it from him to be able to keep in touch when they head to the mines in the morning.

Around the campfire that night, things are tense. To ease this, Eona shares some of her unconventional history as a gang enforcer, alcoholic, and prisoner before she found a new purpose in her god Ilmater. Now, she eases the suffering of others. Lianna, relating to Eona’s tale, details how she came to meet the party after her politician parents disappeared and she was imprisoned and then on the run for a long time. Sildar finds them and takes Georgie aside. The two admit that they love each other, but his anger at her for leaving seems too great to overcome. Seeing Georgie is obviously distraught results in Nate trying to beat Sildar into action.

In the morning Duncan supplies the party with the last of the resistance’s magic items so they can infiltrate the mines and destroy the cause of all this at its source. The party decides to approach Sildar together to ask him to join them. He agrees, not really seeing the point of going on living as he currently is. They make a plan to approach Phandalin after learning of another entrance into the mines from Nori Rockseeker, who also lets slip that Sildar had been planning to ask Georgie a certain question regarding a wedding before she left.

In a delightfully absurd and unexpected turn, the army of ducks that Lianna and Oberon outfitted to drill into the mines before they left is still alive. The party plans to use them to access the secret entrance to the mines.

Over the days, the party begins to patch things up amongst themselves. Georgie and Sildar make up, and as Georgie accepts his proposal, the entrance to the mine is unearthed…

When last we left our heroes, two huge maggots spewing acidic vomit were approaching them as they headed through the Feywild toward Queen Titania.

On a Feywild-induced time limit, the party flees after felling one of the maggots, which proved to be more of a challenge than initially anticipated. The party makes their way across a massive moat. A few unlucky missteps later, the party is safely across. Most of the party is in need of a rest, much to Georgie’s frustration.

When the party finally makes their way into the castle, they observe sacs containing squirming maggot-like shapes above them. Needle-covered vines have completely taken over the castle including its Queen who seems to be in a deep slumber on her throne. Unable to wake her immediately, Oberon and Lianna explore her chambers where Oberon begins to recover some of his memories. He recalls having a falling out with Titania over her experimentation with the magic that makes up the drugs Spark & Sludge. The pair discovers a frightened pixie named Pepper hiding under a bed. She reveals that the Feywild was corrupted – the inhabitants turned into the maggots the party has been facing.

In a moment of inspiration, Oberon feeds Titania a vial of the Anti-Venom, waking her. Rather than the hostile meeting they expected, Titania reveals that she’s been keeping the corruption from spreading further. A Great Serpent brought the drug to her realm. She experimented with its magical essence, but it soon festered and spread. She suggests returning to her meditation and closing off the portals to the Feywild to stop any further spread. She warns Oberon that this will drastically alter his own powers. He accepts this and sings her to eternal sleep with a lullaby she used to sing to him. The party exits via the very last portal.

The Twilight Faire is gone. The town of Torgem is completely abandoned. Lianna and Eona go off in search of the green dragon Zander but don’t find him. The others head to Duncan’s, which also turns out to be deserted. Nate and Georgie explore Duncan’s room and find his diary and a private safe. The diary chronicles his heartbreak over Georgie, through his rise to power in Torgem, and through his hiring of Nori Rockseeker to keep an eye on the party. It also reveals that he stole back the belt Nate gave the temple clerics to bring him back from the dead. Nate searches for it in the safe, but the only valuable item inside is a beautifully engraved magic ring.  The diary reveals it was an engagement ring meant for Georgie that contains a telepathic link to its partner ring.

The party reunites, and Georgie dons the ring in hopes of contacting Duncan. He answers. After some prodding, he reveals that the party has been gone for TWO AND A HALF YEARS. In that time, the Yinths activated the device in the mines and took over the North. He and Sildar have made up and now lead a small resistance in the south, but Waterdeep is gone. Duncan urges them to come to the Old Forest to meet the resistance. Broken, the party travels south.

Paths There and Home – The Letters of Rowlie Rushlight / Chapter 4

These are the letters of Rowlie Rushlight throughout his adventures in Middle Earth, penned by GrimJack21502.

Watch Journey into Middle Earth every Monday at 4pm Eastern on Twitch.

Gerald, I write this letter from deep within the Mirkwood and I do so knowing that there is none to deliver it to you in Dale. However, I continue putting quill to parchment as it helps to alleviate some of the weariness that has begun to settle into these old bones.

This journey has grown, my boy, and no longer is it an errand for King Bard. Instead it has splintered like a cracked window after a hard frost, threatening to branch off into too many trails to follow, and we five are caught in its purpose and carried by a strong current to some unknown destination.

There is too much to tell and too little time to tell it.

We encountered some of the oldest inhabitants of Mirkwood, the giant spiders, and I dare say they were almost the end of us.

Can’t remember if I mentioned this to you, lad, but the city in Gondor, Minas Tirith, means ‘The Tower of Guard’ or ‘The Tower of Watch’ in Sindarin. Though I am not deserving of such luck, I saw the title made manifest in the actions of Hardwin, son of Hurwin. While protecting me from the aforementioned spiders, he used his sword and shield to carve great suffering into the foul beasts. Had he not been there, I fear this letter would never have been written.

Our resident dwarf, Bartleby Stonefoot, continues to surprise. While knowledgeable in the arts of stealth and subtlety, his fearlessness and warrior instincts rival that of any in our fellowship. The more I think about it, the more I begin to believe he may prove the difference in our continuing conflict.

And Finally, much to all of our surprises, his included, Arvehlan continues to suffer more from this journey than the rest of us. I have been too long in this world to know that his misfortune is from lack of skill; sometimes the Fates wish it one way and Men the other. I have no doubt that he will once again earn favor and show his true worth; it simply pains me to see him so helpless and, quite frankly, distracted.

We are several days from the home of Radagast the Brown, but I do believe I have devised a way to eliminate our need for sleep and food. If I bake and grind, treated and dried Reedmace and we inhale the result, we should experience the benefits above. I shall tell you the results in my following letter.

Stay safe, my boy.

With a proud heart,

Rowlie

P.S. We are in Radagast’ s. Listen carefully, lad, under no circumstances are you to attempt to create the powered Reedmace as I explained in the body of this missive. You are absolutely not to bottle it in our dropper vials and sell it for 5 silver pennies a dose. Finally, now listen carefully, my boy, you are not to raise the price to 10 silver pennies for returning customers. I hope none of this has been done by the time I return.

P.P.S. Also gather as much Dihque as you can. I do believe we have finally found something that focuses Arvehlan.

P.P.P.S The previous ‘post scripts’ are not part of Rowlie’s actual letter 😉
